Delbert Burton, Jr.

Delbert Burton, Jr.

Born - 1946

Died - October 2, 1990

Burt Burton, Jr. went by the name of "Burt:" to his University of Texas friends. Burt was a very active member of the club in 1965 when its name was the University of Texas Skin and Scuba Diving Society. Burt is shown as a member on the 1967 Fall club membership roster. Burt held the office of Parliamentarian from the Spring semester of 1965 through the Fall of 1965. Again, he held this same office in the Spring of 1968. He was President of the club from the Spring semester of 1966 through the Fall semester of 1966.

Burt had a nice sense of humor and seemed to make everyone laugh. His comments during meetings were always entertaining. The last time he spoke to the club was at the club's 25th Anniversary celebration meeting (February 2, 1989) in which he related his memories about the club.

The image below was taken on the North side of Gregory Gym at the University of Texas at Austin. During the mid sixties, class registration would be a week long process held inside Gregory Gym. Once the students exited registration out a side door of Gregory Gym, various student organizations would have tables and booths set up to promote their organization and recruit new members. The photo shows several dive club members, including Burt, manning the dive club table or just hanging out having a good time during registration week..

The next image below shows a club membership card signed by Burt as club President. Note the club's original name on the card, The University of Texas Skin and Scuba Diving Society!

On May 10, 1968 at the club banquet held at Bergstrom Officers Club [ Berstrom Air Force Base now Austin-Bergstrom International Airport], Burt Burton and Chuck Erwin were jointly awarded the University Underwater Society Service Award.

Burt graduated at the University of Texa at Austin in 1968 with a Bachelor's Degree and then went on to graduate the University of Texas School of Law in 1973.

Burt's death was a great shock and caused much sadness among former club members.
