Kathleen McCue , known to club members as "Kathy", was a member when the club's name was the University of Texas Underwater Society [originally in 1964 the University of Texas Skin & Scuba Diving Society (UTS & SDS) with name chage in September 1966 to University of Texas Underwater Society (UTUS) and then again in Februrary 1968 to University Underwater Society (UUS)]. Kathleen learned how to scuba dive through the club's scuba course and held several offices in the club. She became the club's Secretary from the Spring semester of 1967 through the Spring semester of 1968; She was elected Vice-President in the Spring of 1968 through Fall of 1968; In the Summer of 1968, she was Equipment Officer; Points Chairman, Spring of 1969; Diving Instructor, Fall of 1968 through the Fall of 1969. Needless to say, Kathleen was one active club member!

Kathleen lived with a group of club members/officers/diving instructors at 910 Baylor Street in Austin, Texas. This house was a hub of club activites at that time. Many monthly officer meetings took place at this location as well as where the club stored its equipment trailer, air compressor and class scuba equipment/rental gear. This two story house with a pair of domer windows on the front is located on the west side of little dead end section of Baylor Street just south of West 10th Street.

Kathleen has an impressive academic and career background, focusing on helping children who have a family member dealing with cancer. She wrote the book Someone I Love is Sick: Helping Very Young Children Cope with Cancer in the Family. "Kathleen is a Child Life Specialist  with more than thirty years experience devoted to the mental health of children facing medical situations."

Hello, Doug and Paul,

What a surprise to get this email, and think about the “old” days of UT Scuba Club!  I loved looking at the website and pictures, and remembering some of the events described.  Do you both remember that I used to haul our compressor behind my Rambler station wagon?  And I recall a couple of winter “ice” dives.  And a few cave dives that violated every safety rule we now take for granted.  We were really nuts back then!

Yes, I am still diving, at age 66.  I go somewhere warm and wonderful a couple of times a year.  My favorite is a little island of the coast of Honduras called Cayos Cochinos.  In the last 18 months, I’ve been diving in Honduras, Turks and Caicos, Japan and Hawaii.  Finally saw the elusive manta rays.  I’m as fascinated with the underwater world now as I was 48 years ago when I took my first diving class at UT and joined the club.  I still have my old jacket emblems and a couple of cards.  I am retiring from my work with cancer patients in June of this year, and it is my intention to move back to Texas, as my family now lives in Llano.  The “Flower Banks” in the gulf are still on my “to do” list.  So perhaps I can check in with you guys when I move back, and be part of any future reunions.

Feel free to share any of this with any old friends.  I hope you all have a wonderful 50th anniversary celebration.  Raise a glass for me, and know that I will be thinking of you all tomorrow night.

UNIVERSITY SCUBA CLUB - THE EARLY YEARS

Hello Kathy,

How nice to hear from you!  I have thought of you numerous times over the years and wondered how you were doing.  Very good on your continuing to dive and your upcoming retirement.

Thank you for your club memories!  I will post them on the history page without your email address sometime in the future as I need to update some things.  If you wish to write up anything else, I will post it.

I did not remember your being the one who hauled the compressor around.  I do remember the compressor along with the club's equipment trailer sitting at the end of Baylor Street where you use to live.  That address was the place to be!  Remember attending an officer's meeting there and a party.

You guys looked so cool in those club jackets!  I think they were white in color?  I remember your getting the Alfa Romeo Spider, blue in color, wasn't it?  You looked pretty good riding around in that car; however, you needed a better garage than the little shed in the back of the Baylor property.

Here is how your Baylor Street home looked in 2010.

 910 Baylor Street; Austin, Texas

One block north on same side of street is an ill fated condo project that never was completed and now is know as Graffiti Hill.

The YWCA at 405 W. 18th Street where you probably took your pool lessons in the diving course has recently been torn down.  Interesting history of the Travis Bldg/YWCA - http://www.austintexas.gov/edims/document.cfm?id=131766 .  The pool's ceiling is shown in the right lower center of this image.  Looks like they tore the building down and filled in the entrances to the pool.  Bet it is spooky in the pool area now!

If you have a chance, would love to have photos of your club jacket, membership cards and any club photos you might have.  I will see that they get put on the club's history page.

Okay, great hearing from you Kathy!  Keep on doing good stuff and living a good life.  Hope to see/hear from you in the future.

Thanks again,

Paul Johnston

Hi All. Some news to pass on.
I got this note from Paul Johnston about a reunion gathering this coming Friday at Scholz Garden.  I'm fairly sure I won't be able to make it on Friday but I'll see if there's the possibility of a club facebook 'event' page being set up for alumni to contribute history, stories, images and whatnot.

The club has web pages with some historical background and timeline--authored by Paul.  Very interesting.

They are also on Facebook as a group page--and it is a running commentary of what's happening right now.

Website:   http://www.utscuba.com/

Facebook:  University Scuba Club

Club Links and Pauls Early History:   http://austinnewsstory.com/UniversityScubaClub_kfyi64/index5.htm

Who woulda thought?  I have some 'archival stuff' that I'll pass along and/or post the images on the facebook page.  Pass this along if you have any names and addresses in your books.

Big Love and Hugs.  We're behind!  Let's catch up.  Anybody for a cup of coffee at the Union?
