Alexander Herold Hopgood. went by the name of "Alex" to his University of Texas friends. Alex was a very active member of the University Scuba Club. He held the office of club Treasurer from November 3, 1998 through March 1999. Alex was elected Safety Officer in the Fall of 1999 through Spring 2000. He was President of the club from the Fall semester of 2000 through the Summer semester of 2001.

President Hopgood,, upon his upcoming graduation in August 2001 and in the newsletter section of the August club web page, mentions that the club needed a few dedicated volunteers, maybe 3 or 4, for the upcoming year for the club to successfully carry on. He mentions that having formal officer positions were not even necessrary, just a few people willing to share the work. From the Fall of 2000 through August 2001, the interest and support of club officers fell away leaving Alex to carry on as best as possible, which he did!
