The first Internet web page for the dive club appeared in February 1996. It is not completely clear as to who actually designed the first web page, but Carey Simon who served as the Newsletter and Web Page Editor for the club from Fall 1996 to Spring 1998 was instrumental in its early creation and development. In a conversation with Carey in the late nineties, and if memory serves me correct, he gave the impression that the initial web page templates may have been developed by someone else and then he further developed them over the next couple of years. Carey was the one responsible for developing the first dive buddy e-mail list where members could contact each other about going diving outside regular club activities. The dive club owes Carey a big round of appreciation for his pioneering work in developing the club's first web page. Here is Carey's Internet announcement on 4-8-1996 about the club's first web page. Notice the " (512)916-DIVE " phone number listed. This was a club Dive Line phone number that club members/anyone could call and find out about local diving conditions in the central Texas area.
With the help of archive.org, many of the early club web pages have been able to be retrieved through this organizations archives. Not all links within these pages are/were archived. Many social media pages have means to prevent their pages from being archived by robot crawlers.
Generally, in the sampling of web pages shown above, only the index or title page for the web page is shown. Some files are HTML files which your browser will open and some are PDF files which will require a free PDF reader for you to open them. The links shown on these archived web pages may or may not still be functional. If they are still functional, these links may not show the linked pages as they appeared on the date of the original web page creations. The date of the web page may be the date I saved the web page or it may be the date shown on the bottom of the web page showing the date it was created. Sometimes, web pages were changed and the date on the web page creation date or revision date would not be changed, hence the reason that the date of the web page may be the day it was saved to indicate different information being displayed on two or more web pages still showing the identical revision or creation dates.

Since the dive club's founding at the University of Texas at Austin, the club's mode of communicating with its members has followed the same methods adopted by our increasingly high tech society. The table above shows the progression of communication tools ranging from the postal newsletter, Internet web pages, electronic mail to various social media pages. Even though the actual means of communication has become a physically easier and faster process, the preplanning, promotion, entertainment, dues collection and activities of a viable university dive club still require just as much attention and effort from the club's officers of today as it did from the dive club's officers of yesteryear!
