**Traci Lamar Hancock**

*Born: March 12, 1960, in Lubbock, Texas*

*Lived To: May 12, 2012, in Austin, Texas*

Traci gave me a last hug on Christmas eve, 2011. As has been the tradition for many, many years, the Texana Dames closed out the Armadillo Christmas Bazaar by playing there on Christmas eve. Traci played the accordian along with her sister Conni and mother Charlene plus a host of other family musicians and friends. Since 1998, I have had the privilege of photographing Traci and the Texana Dames performing here. For the last year, Traci battled ovarian cancer. I had wondered if she would be able to perform Christmas eve 2011. She did! During her years of travel with her musical family, Traci became fluent in Spanish and loved playing and singing romantic Spanish songs. The Texana Dames were inducted into the Country Music Association of Texas’ Hall of Fame in 2002 as well as the Supernatural Family Band which she was a member of. After the evening's performance, Traci move off to the side of the stage and sat on a stool to greet her fans. As I waited my turn, I thought about this might be my last time to see Traci. It's hard to say goodbye. I said some encouraging words of the nature of keeping doing her best to get well and that I always enjoyed her performances. She hugged me and I could sense the frailness of her condition. Normally, when I leave the Christmas Bazaar on Christmas eve, I have a feeling of joy for having spent the last couple of weeks photographing the many musical artists performing there. However, this past Christmas eve, I thought about the possibility that Traci might not be here much longer and the tremendous loss to her family and loved ones. Losing friends is always tough. Model Ashley in front of the famous "Alien Frog" mural. This mural is located on the northwest corner of Guadalupe and 21st street in Austin. It is right across from the UT campus, diagonally across from Dobie Mall. This mural was done in 1993 by Daniel Johnston based on a cartoon character done by himself in 1983. A few years ago a new business establishment was going in where this mural was located and then the mural was scheduled for destruction. Protest by supporters of Austin street art saved the mural. It costs the business an extra $50,000 to modify their remodeling plans to save the artwork. That business eventually closed and was replaced by another business.
